Shankumugham Beach
Shankumugham is probably not as famous as Kovalam is, but it is just as interesting. This clean beach has been a place of tourist attraction for more than five decades. It is very close to the tip of the Indian peninsula and to view the sunsets here is just breathtaking. There’s a stone pavilion on the beach carved with traditional Indian figures. It has been a spot for films and music albums for long. A nearby park offers recreation for children. A massive, 35m-long, stone sculpture – Jalakanyaka – of a mermaid sits near the road to the beach.
HOW TO GET THERE
Trivandrum is the closest city. Trivandrum Airport and Trivandrum railway station are located nearby. Buses and taxis will connect you to Cochin, Kollam and Calicut.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
‘Vettukaadu Church’ (Christ the King Church) is near the beach. Take a walk towards it, spend some time in mediation. You should taste the fares at the popular coffee shop ‘Indian Cofee House’. Cycling near the beach, too, is a relaxing experience.
